Select a passage and add a comment

Select a non-empty passage, then add a comment from its context menu or the comments tool. Check the quotation, write your feedback and confirm the addition. Enter inserts a line break. Use Command + Option + M on Mac or Ctrl + Alt + M on Windows to start a comment. In the input field, Command + Enter or Ctrl + Enter adds it.

Clicking outside or pressing Escape hides an unfinished draft without discarding it. Use Cancel to discard it explicitly.

Edit a comment

Choose Edit from a comment’s menu to change its text inside the card. Update confirms that comment; Cancel discards only its edit. Enter inserts a line break; Command/Ctrl + Enter updates it.

You can edit several comments while drafting a new one. Unconfirmed input survives hiding the tool, switching documents or history, and restarting the app. Updating keeps the comment’s ID, creation time and current quotation target. Document Undo reverses the update.

If the comment changes externally or is deleted, your input remains and cannot overwrite it. Select and copy the draft text, or check the current comment in details and cancel. Comment copy actions use confirmed text and never silently apply your draft.

Review comments and quotations

Comments in the list, history and details show the creation time, comment text and quotation in that order. Times use your language and local time zone.

Select a comment to locate its passage. The document stays still when the whole quotation is already visible. Long quotations show their beginning. Selecting an underline reveals its card in the list while keeping the document position and editing selection. Editing inside the passage updates its quotation, underline and copied text. Insertions exactly at either boundary stay outside the passage. The current target survives saving and restarting.

External edits also update the target when the correspondence is unambiguous. Deleting the entire passage to empty text retains the last quotation and marks the target as deleted. Replacing a broader range that contains the passage removes the comment when its target cannot be identified. Document Undo restores it. Ambiguous changes or missing comparison data retain the comment with an unknown position.

For a deleted or unresolved target, choose Specify target text beside the quotation, then select a passage in the document. Completing the selection updates the target. Cancel or Escape keeps the previous quotation and all unfinished edits. Normal targets follow document edits automatically.

If external edits delete or change comments themselves, Fumidama applies the file content without asking and shows the count with Undo in the comments list. Undo restores only the deleted or changed comments and does not roll back the document body; document Undo reverses it. After you dismiss the notice, use the history to review earlier comments. Unreadable comment metadata is not treated as a deletion: the previous comments are retained until you repair it. Copying only the Markdown to another environment does not transfer this recovery data.

The list starts in document order. Use the “…” menu in the comments header to switch to Newest first. Comments with unknown positions are never deleted automatically. They are grouped in a collapsed “Comments with unknown position” section at the end of the list, where you can specify a target or delete each one, or use Delete all to remove only that section after confirmation. Switching keeps your drafts and selections. Normal and historical views retain separate choices until the window closes. Bulk copies and detail lists use the list order at the time of the action, regardless of the order in which you selected comments.

Share feedback with AI

Choose Copy together… from the “…” menu in the comments header, check the comments to include, then copy from the footer. Use Select all to include every comment. A successful copy includes the quotations and returns to the normal list. A failed copy keeps your choices for retry. Cancel keeps the selection when you reopen it in the same document.

An individual copy action copies the comment text. Use multiple selection or comment details when you also need the quotation. These copies contain the creation time with its time zone, comment text and quotation, in that order. Detail copies begin with the document name. Paste the copied feedback into your chosen AI tool or a CLI you start manually in the terminal. Copying does not save the document, launch a terminal or send anything. Save first if AI needs to read the current file.

Ask external agents to preserve the fumidama.comments Front Matter value, leave saved quotes and coordinates unchanged, and keep comments after editing.

Explain what you want to discuss and whether AI should edit immediately. Comments do not have reply threads or a resolved status.

Remove a comment

Use the comment’s delete action. This changes the document, so review and save it. Document Undo can restore a comment you just removed.

Deleting a comment with unfinished edits asks you to confirm removal of that comment and its unsaved input. Cancel keeps the input. Other comment drafts and new-comment input are unaffected.
